The autonomous vehicles used in the Navetty research project move to the next phase after thorough testing in a controlled environment as they are now entirely driverless and without a supervisor inside. 

The autonomous and electric shuttles used in the Navetty research project are now totally driverless in a busy, regular traffic scenario in Yvelines, France, announced by Transdev. This is a first for Europe.

The Navetty research programme intends to secure the implementation of these autonomous vehicle technologies on roads open to public traffic. Additionally, EasyMile, Transdev, ArianeGroup, and VEDECOM are supporting the initiative.

In order to allow up to 10 ArianeGroup personnel to travel around the company’s 92-hectare property while ensuring service quality and safety, two shuttles run daily on trips of up to 6.6 kilometres. Over 50 daily journeys totaling 23,000km have been performed since the start.

As it brings together all the intricacies of a metropolis, Transdev claims that this location is the ideal starting point for future deployment on an urban scale. Without altering current infrastructures or designated lanes, the shuttles are integrated into a common space where automobiles and pedestrians move about. The route incorporates crossroads, traffic circles, a tunnel, and 18 stops dispersed around the area.

Early 2023 will see the release of a mobile application for on-demand reservations after the initial technology objectives have been met. An integrated geolocation system will make it possible for employees to request a shuttle straight from their location.

The inauguration of a route on an open road between the Mureaux train station and the corporate site is scheduled for 2023 as part of the ongoing Navetty project. This will be an opportunity to evaluate the last mile service’s implementation while also reflecting on the upcoming deployment phases.
