A new £40 million competition to kick-start commercial self-driving services has been launched.The ‘Commercialising Connected and Automated Mobility’ competition will provide grants to help roll out commercial use self-driving vehicles across the UK from 2025, delivering convenience for consumers and making journeys safer, greener and more reliable.Read More

UK kicks off negotiations with Mexico for £4bn post-Brexit trade deal

Self-driving startup Wayve taps Microsoft for ‘supercomputer muscle’

British startup Wayve said on Wednesday it will use supercomputer infrastructure designed for the firm by its investor Microsoft to process vast amounts of data as it develops machine learning-based models for self-driving cars. Wayve’s technology relies on machine learning using camera sensors fitted on the outside of the vehicle. Read More

Driverless cars took to Oxford roads in experiment

Fully autonomous vehicles have been driven on Oxford roads with no on-board driver and they could soon be used to deliver food. The autonomous vehicle company Oxbotica has now completed its first driverless vehicle test on publicly accessible roads in Oxford after two years of trials. Trials also took place both off- and on-road across the UK, Europe and North America. Read More

Assisted-driving systems aren’t collision-proof, AAA testing shows

Assisted-driving systems don’t perform well enough to consistently avoid collisions, new testing by AAA shows. When faced with an oncoming dummy car at 25 miles per hour, the Hyundai and Subaru didn’t slow down, while the Tesla did slow to about 3 miles per hour. But all three collided with the dummy vehicle, AAA said. Read More

Cleveron Mobility and DPD Eesti claim autonomous vehicle delivery first

Cleveron Mobility and DPD Eesti say they’re the first in Europe to deliver a package to a customer via a driverless autonomous vehicle. Said vehicle is manufactured by Cleveron Mobility, with delivery taking place under the DPD banner. “The e-commerce market is continuing to grow rapidly in the developed world,” says CEO Arno Kütt. Read More

Kodiak Robotics showcases autonomous trucking failsafe technology

Self-driving trucking company Kodiak Robotics has demonstrated its ‘fallback’ system, which can autonomously pull a self-driving truck over to the side of the road in the event of a truck or system failure. The company pointed out that the ability to perform a safe, reliable fallback, otherwise known as a ‘minimal risk condition’, is critical to safely deploying driverless trucks on public roads. Read More

Funding Calls & Opportunities

Horizon Europe Guarantee – EIT KICs 2022 – The UK government has announced a new scheme that guarantees funding for successful applicants to the first and second wave of Horizon Europe grant awards regardless of the outcome of the UK’s efforts to associate to Horizon Europe. This funding route is to deliver the UK Government’s Horizon Europe guarantee. Specifically, it covers funding for UK partners involved in EIT-KIC activities in the 2022 calendar year. Read More 

Energy Catalyst Round 9 – Mid Stage – Innovate UK, part of UK Research and Innovation, will work with the Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) and the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) as part of the Ayrton Fund to invest up to £20 million in innovation projects. The aim of this competition is to accelerate the innovations needed to create new or improved clean energy access in sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia or Indo-Pacific regions. Read More

Net Zero Hydrogen Fund – Strand 2 – Capital expenditure (CAPEX) – Strand 2 of the Net Zero Hydrogen Fund will provide capital expenditure (CAPEX) support for new low carbon hydrogen production facilities to begin deployment in the early 2020s. Read More 

Net Zero Hydrogen Fund – Strand 1 Development Expenditure (DEVEX) – Strand 1 of the Net Zero Hydrogen Fund will provide development expenditure (DEVEX) support for front end engineering design (FEED) and post-FEED studies for new low carbon hydrogen production facilities. Read More 

Canada-UK Net Zero Value Chains – Transportation – UK registered businesses and Canadian SMEs can apply to collaborate on joint R&D projects that enable the transition to net zero for the automotive, rail, or maritime sectors. Read More 

UK-South Korea Collaborative R&D – The aim of this competition is to fund collaborative research and development (CR&D) projects focused on industrial research. Your proposal must include at least one partner from the UK and one partner from South Korea.
