Self-driving car stopped by San Francisco police

San Francisco police officers were faced with a new challenge after stopping an autonomous vehicle with no-one inside. Officers approached the car, operated by Cruise, because it had been driving without headlights.In the incident, captured on film, an officer remarks that there “ain’t nobody in it” before the car moves to what Cruise said was a safer location. The company said the headlights issue was a result of human error. Read More

Bosch acquires autonomous vehicle software start-up Five

Bosch has announced the acquisition of UK-based automated driving start-up Five. With six locations across the UK, Five currently has 140 associates working on software development for safe automated driving systems Following the acquisition, Five, which is headquartered in Cambridge, will become part of Bosch’s Cross-Domain Computing Solutions division. Read More

Steer Tech, a Maryland-based AV technology company, has been hyperfocused on providing high-level autonomy for one specific use case: automated parking. The startup has secured at least two OEM partnerships to embed its parking tech as a feature for passenger vehicles, but now it’s expanding on that original thesis and moving into the commercial sector. Read More

FedEx to invest heavily in autonomous vehicle research

FedEx’s founder and outgoing CEO Fred Smith has told a US media outlet that the company is to invest heavily in autonomous vehicles through the next year.“You’ll see in late June an enormous effort towards autonomous trucks that move over the highway. Not in the city, where we think our drivers are better for the pickup and delivery of the long-distance vehicles,” Smith said in an interview on CNBC’s Mad Money. Read More

The one-day event covers emerging trailer technologies, cold-chain decarbonisation, autonomous trucks, maintenance, electrification and fuel cell technology. COVID-19: Government guidance for employees, employers and businesses

This guidance also provides details of support available to businesses including:

  • Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme
  • Deferring VAT and Self-Assessment payments

Automotive Transformation Fund Scale up Readiness Validation (SuRV) – Organisations can apply for a share of up to £15 million to validate readiness for scale up of net zero technologies and processes. These projects must produce physical production samples, of a quantity and quality which supports the case for the commercial viability of scale up in the UK. Canada-UK Net Zero Value Chains – Transportation – UK registered businesses and Canadian SMEs can apply to collaborate on joint R&D projects that enable the transition to net zero for the automotive, rail, or maritime sectors. Read More 

APC 21: Developing automotive technologies and capability for net zero – The Advanced Propulsion Centre (APC) provides funding, support and insight for the development of low carbon and net zero automotive technologies. It aims to support the UK’s transition towards net zero product manufacturing and supply chain in the UK automotive sector. In this competition round APC is investing up to £25 million. Read More 

Driving the Electric Revolution: Building Talent for the Future 2 – UK registered organisations can apply for a share of up to £4.5 million for innovative skills, talent, and training projects for Power Electronics, Motors and Drives (PEMD). Innovation in time resilience, dissemination and application – feasibility – Innovate UK, part of UK Research and Innovation, is working with the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) to invest up to £4.7 million in innovation projects that contribute to resilient time, frequency and synchronisation (TFS) and its dissemination and application. Read More

SBRI – digital technologies for robotic nuclear decommissioning – This is a Small Business Research Initiative (SBRI) competition funded by the UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA). This is a single phase competition. Your project must focus only on the development of bespoke technologies and methodologies in one of the 5 challenges in the LongOps programme. Read More 

UK-South Korea Collaborative R&D – The aim of this competition is to fund collaborative research and development (CR&D) projects focused on industrial research. Your proposal must include at least one partner from the UK and one partner from South Korea.
