Waymo to start charging money for its robotaxi rides in San Francisco

Waymo, got the green light to start charging for rides in its autonomous taxis in San Francisco. The California Public Utilities Commission awarded the company a permit that allows them to charge for rides as long as there’s a human safety driver behind the wheel. California requires that AV companies obtain a series of permits in order to start earning money from their autonomous vehicles. Read More

Jaguar Land Rover-Nvidia to develop autonomous cars

Jaguar Land Rover has partnered with American software giant Nvidia to introduce heightened connectivity and advanced autonomous driving functionality in all cars launched from 2025. Forming an important part of JLR CEO Thierry Bollore’s bold Reimagine transformation strategy for the carmaker, the new multi-year partnership means the two firms will collaborate on software development. Read More

Verizon partners with Audi for 5G vehicles

Audi of America and Verizon have announced a new partnership, aiming to use Verizon’s 5G Ultra Wideband connectivity within Audi vehicles to enable augmented mobile services and new driving-assistance features, paving the way for the automated vehicles of the future. These vehicles’ capabilities will continue to evolve further once already in use, with software and firmware updates delivered over the air. Read More

Motional and Via launch free autonomous ride-hail service in Las Vegas

Motional, the Aptiv-Hyundai joint venture aiming to commercialize autonomous driving technology, has launched a new robotaxi service in Las Vegas with on-demand and transit tech service Via. The two companies, which first announced a partnership back in October 2020, will provide free rides in autonomous vehicles to members of the public in downtown Las Vegas. Read More

Mercedes Aims to Offer Hands-Free Driver-Assist System in 2022

We’re seeing more automakers come out with semi-autonomous driver-assist systems for consumers to purchase in mainstream vehicles. Mercedes announced the news in a results call with Automotive News earlier this week. The Level 3 driver-assist system that the automaker is referring to is called Drive Pilot. Read More

China’s first commercial license for unmanned driving services issued

The city of Yangquan in North China’s Shanxi province on Friday issued a license to Baidu for the commercial operation of unmanned autonomous driving services — the first license of its kind issued in China. Baidu launched its autonomous driving research and development in 2013. The company has so far carried out road tests in nearly 30 Chinese cities. Read More

Automotive Transformation Fund Expression of Interest: Round 19 – The Automotive Transformation Fund (ATF) is an Advanced Propulsion Centre (APC) programme that aims to establish a competitive and sustainable UK supply chain. It offers a share of up to £1billion of funding for capital and associated industrial research projects. Horizon Europe Guarantee – EIT KICs 2021 – This funding route is to deliver the UK Government’s Horizon Europe guarantee. Specifically it covers retrospective funding for UK partners involved in EIT-KIC activities in the 2021 calendar year who have been unable to receive EIT funding. Read More

Automotive Transformation Fund Feasibility Studies: Round 3 – APC is seeking proposals from single organisations or consortiums for business case feasibility studies up to the value of £1 million. UK-Singapore Collaborative R&D – Innovate UK, part of UK Research and Innovation, will invest up to £3 million in innovation projects in partnership with Enterprise Singapore. This competition has an open scope. The aim of this competition is to fund business led collaborative research and development (CR&D) projects focused on industrial research. UK-South Korea Collaborative R&D – The aim of this competition is to fund collaborative research and development (CR&D) projects focused on industrial research. Your proposal must include at least one partner from the UK and one partner from South Korea.
