Major legal changes needed for driverless car era
Human drivers should not be legally accountable for road safety in the era of autonomous cars, a report says. In these cars, the driver should be redefined as a “user-in-charge”, with very different legal responsibilities, according to the law commissions for England and Wales, and Scotland. If anything goes wrong, the company behind the driving system would be responsible, rather than the driver. Read More

World’s first fully autonomous ship navigation system tested on coastal ferry
The Nippon Foundation and the Shin Nihonkai Ferry Company have successfully completed a demonstration test of the world’s first fully autonomous ship navigation systems on a large car ferry. Former SpaceX engineers bring autonomous, electric rail vehicle startup out of stealth
Parallel Systems, a company founded by three former SpaceX engineers to build autonomous battery-electric rail vehicles, came out of stealth mode with a $49.55 million Series A raise. Parallel Systems also intends to use the new investment which was led by Anthos Capital and includes investments from Congruent Ventures, Riot Ventures. Read More

Finnish AV Pilot Claims Artic Conditions Success
A Finnish driverless technology specialist is claiming success of proving the concept can handle extreme winter conditions of ice and snow near the Artic Circle. The autonomous shuttle bus service, part of the EU-funded SHOW project, has been running in Tampere, Finland, operating two Toyota Proace people carriers, automated by Sensible 4, and transporting locals as a last-mile service to a tramline. Hyundai to launch Level 3 self-driving Genesis G90 in H2
Hyundai Motor Co., aims to roll out mass-produced hands-free Level 3 self-driving cars, starting with the flagship luxury Genesis G90 sedan in the second half of this year, to enhance competitiveness in future mobility market. Level 3, known as conditional driving automation, uses various driver assistance systems and artificial intelligence to make decisions based on changing driving situations. Read More

SBRI – Climate and Environmental Risk Analytics for Resilient Finance: Phase 1 – This is a Small Business Research Initiative (SBRI) competition funded by Innovate UK as a continuation of the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) Climate and Environmental Risk Analytics for Resilient Finance (CERAF) competition, which focussed on academic innovation. Knowledge transfer partnerships (KTP): 2021 to 2022, round 5 – UK registered academic institutions, RTOs or Catapults can apply for a share of up to £8 million to fund innovation projects with businesses or not-for-profits. The Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) scheme allows a UK registered business or not-for-profit organisation to partner with a UK higher education (HE) or further education (FE) institution, RTO or Catapult (which we will refer to as the ‘knowledge base partner’).
