Rising stars: Companies growing fast in the Midlands

Conigital, set up in 2015, makes autonomous vehicle technology that works alongside its ride-hailing and sharing app, and a fleet management platform for transport authorities and mobility services. The company has recently completed a project at Southampton airport, where a bus driven by its autonomous technology was used to take passengers from the long-stay car park to the terminal. Read More

PoliMOVE wins the Autonomous Challenge at CES

PoliMOVE competed at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway in a field of five teams from five countries representing seven universities to win the $150,000 grand prize. The rules of the IAC competition required each team to qualify in a high-speed autonomous race car time trial competition determining their seed in the head-to-head passing competition. Read More

Volvo To Start Selling Its First Autonomous Vehicle This Year

Volvo announced an autonomous driving system called Ride Pilot at the Consumer Electronics Show. Volvo customers in California will have access to Ride Pilot as a subscription service at some point after 2022. Based on comments made by Volvo’s Chief Technologies Officer Henrik Green, Ride Pilot would exceed the Society of Automotive Engineers criteria for Level 3 vehicle autonomy. Read More

GM’s Self-Driving Cadillac Concept Is All About Luxury

General Motors introduced its vision for autonomous cars at CES today with a concept vehicle from Cadillac. The result is an electric-powered luxury sedan that focuses on comfort, while off-loading the driving responsibilities to the onboard computer. The car is called InnerSpace, and it looks like it belongs in a science-fiction film. Even GM’s idea for the vehicle comes off as a little dystopian. Read More

Udelv rolls out cab-less Transporter autonomous delivery vehicle

Udelv, a Silicon Valley venture-backed company, has unveiled its first cab-less autonomous electric delivery vehicle for multi-stop delivery, the Transporter, which utilizes the Mobileye Drive self-driving system. The multi-stop electric delivery vehicle features a proprietary, self-contained, hot swappable modular cargo pod called the uPod. Read More

Dallas wants to be the site of Ford and Argo AI’s next autonomous vehicle facility

Dallas council members will vote on whether to approve an economic development agreement with Ford in the hopes of being home to the automaker’s next autonomous vehicle facility, reported The Dallas Morning News. Ford, an investor and customer of AV technology company Argo AI, is working with Argo to commercialize the self-driving technology. Read More

SBRI – Climate and Environmental Risk Analytics for Resilient Finance: Phase 1 – This is a Small Business Research Initiative (SBRI) competition funded by Innovate UK as a continuation of the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) Climate and Environmental Risk Analytics for Resilient Finance (CERAF) competition, which focussed on academic innovation. Commercialising quantum technologies: feasibility studies round 3 – Innovate UK, part of UK Research and Innovation, will invest up to £6 million in innovation projects. Knowledge transfer partnerships (KTP): 2021 to 2022, round 5 – UK registered academic institutions, RTOs or Catapults can apply for a share of up to £8 million to fund innovation projects with businesses or not-for-profits. The Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) scheme allows a UK registered business or not-for-profit organisation to partner with a UK higher education (HE) or further education (FE) institution, RTO or Catapult (which we will refer to as the ‘knowledge base partner’). Read More
