Canada’s First Smart Infrastructure AV Pilot Begins Trial
A bus service claiming full autonomous operation is due to start commercial operations in Ontario later this year. Dubbed the Whitby Autonomous Vehicle Electric (WAVE) the shuttle will serve the town’s waterfront in Whitby, Ontario. The pilot project is being undertaken in partnership between SmartCone Technologies, AutoGuardian By SmartCone. Read More

Waymo to launch “Trusted Tester” programme in San Francisco
Waymo will offer rides to a select few San Francisco riders as part of a new pilot programme to test out its technology. Waymo says “will invite San Franciscans to actively help us shape the future of fully autonomous ride-hailing”. Tesla Could Allow Other Automakers To Utilize Its Self-Driving Technology
At the AI Day event, Autocar asked Musk if Tesla would consider making their FSD software open-source, to which he replied: “Well, it is fundamentally extremely expensive to create the system, so somehow that has to be paid for. But I should say that, if other car companies want to license it and use it in their cars, that’d be cool. This is not intended to just be limited to Tesla cars.” Read More

Goodyear, Plus Announce Autonomous Trucks Collaboration
The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. announced a collaboration with automated driving company Plus to integrate Goodyear’s suite of services with Plus technology. The effort will explore how autonomous driving systems can incorporate feedback from connected tires solutions, according to an Aug. 23 release from Goodyear. Read More

Nuro is building a factory and test track in Nevada for its autonomous delivery robots
Nuro, announced a dramatic expansion of its physical footprint. The company said it will spend $40 million on the construction of a manufacturing facility and test track for its fleet of self-driving robot vehicles. Both facilities will be located in Southern Nevada, which in recent years has become a hotbed for manufacturing and testing for the future of transportation. Read More

Hyundai Mobis M.Vision X Concept Heads to Munich
Hyundai Mobis, which is the South Korean industrial giant’s automotive supplier arm, is headed to the IAA in Munich next month with the M.Vision X concept that promises to fit right in with the Mobility theme of the new show. Designed as an autonomous vehicle meant for four passengers, the M.Vision X concept features windows that can transform into displays for the benefit of the passengers. Read More

SBRI – Digital transformation of Hanoi Metro Line 5, Vietnam – This is a Small Business Research Initiative (SBRI) competition funded by Innovate UK and jointly delivered by Innovate UK and Crossrail International with support from the Department of International Trade in Vietnam. The aim of the competition is to support organisations to undertake feasibility studies, that demonstrate how innovation can support Hanoi Metropolitan Railway Management Board (MRB) with their digital transformation. SBRI Global Rail Export Innovation for Australia, Canada and India – This is a Small Business Research Initiative (SBRI) competition funded by Innovate UK and jointly delivered by Innovate UK and the Department for International Trade. Future flight challenge phase 3: strand 2 – The aim of this competition is to fund projects that will deliver the 2024 vision of the Future Flight Challenge and position the UK as a leader in the third revolution of aviation. This competition will build on the success of the 2020 Phase 2 competition and will focus primarily on the demonstration aspects of these novel air vehicles and systems. In Strand 2 projects must focus on developing enabling technologies and cross-cutting systems that support the deployment of these novel air vehicles in UK airspace. Read More
Future flight challenge phase 3: strand 1 – The aim of this competition is to fund projects that will deliver the 2024 vision of the Future Flight Challenge and position the UK as a leader in the third revolution of aviation. This competition will build on the success of the 2020 Phase 2 competition and will focus primarily on the demonstration aspects of these novel air vehicles and systems. ISCF Transforming Foundation Industry – Small Scale R&D Strand 2 – The Transforming Foundation Industries (TFI) Challenge fund will work with Innovate UK, part of UK Research and Innovation, to invest up to £1.5 million in innovation projects. Innovate UK Smart Grants: August 2021 – UK registered organisations can apply for a share of up to £25 million for game-changing and commercially viable R&D innovation that can significantly impact the UK economy. This funding is from Innovate UK, part of UK Research and Innovation. Women in Innovation Awards 2021/22: Round 13 – The aim of this competition is to find women with exciting, innovative ideas and ambitious plans that will inspire others. The awards are for female founders, co-founders or senior decision makers working in businesses that have been operating for at least one year. Applicants must be confident, with the support of an award, that they can make a significant contribution to a pressing societal, environmental or economic challenge through their innovative project.
