Elon Musk says Tesla is working on humanoid robots

Tesla CEO Elon Musk says his company is working on a humanoid robot and that it will build a prototype “sometime next year.” The humanoid robot will leverage Tesla’s experience with automated machines in its factories, as well as some of the hardware and software that powers the company’s Autopilot driver assistance software. Musk revealed drawings of the robot on his company’s “AI Day” event. Read More

May Mobility announces launch of new on-demand AV shuttle in Michigan

May Mobility, an innovative AV technology and shuttle operations company, in partnership with the City of Grand Rapids, Via and Gentex, have announced the launch of an on-demand AV shuttle service in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The expanded, on-demand service began on July 26, 2021, as part of Phase 2 of the Grand Rapids Autonomous Vehicle Initiative. Read More

Toronto commissioning 3D maps to get ready for autonomous vehicles

Ecopia AI will make a high-definition map of Toronto, ON to help the deployment of self-driving cars in the future. The goal of the 3D map is to create a digital twin of Toronto using AI to mini geospatial and street view images of the city to generate a digital recreation. The key of these maps is to accurately map things like curb heights, crosswalks, stop signs. Read More

Self-driving vehicle challenge in SW China tests cars in actual scenarios

Leading car manufacturers, research institutes, college teams, and individual participants are taking part in a self-driving vehicle challenge game in China. The four-day game, officially named the i-VISTA Autonomous Vehicle Grand Challenge, consists of five rounds of competitions on decision analysis, and the control and execution capability of the vehicles. Read More

China’s Baidu launches second chip and a ‘robocar’ 

Baidu unveiled its second-generation artificial intelligence chip, its first “robocar” and a rebranded driverless taxi app, underscoring how these new areas of technology are key to the company’s future growth. Robin Li, CEO of Baidu, has tried to convince investors the company’s future lies in AI and related areas such as autonomous driving. Aurora releases tool to gauge safety of self-driving systems

Aurora, the Silicon Valley self-driving startup, has released what it says is the industry’s first tool for evaluating whether and when autonomous trucks and cars are safe to deploy on public roads without a human behind the wheel. “We think this is the only way you can get to a safe, commercializable product,” said co-founder and CEO Chris Urmson of Aurora’s new Safety Case Framework. Read More

Artpark plans India’s first autonomous vehicle test track

Artpark plans to set up India’s first test track for driverless vehicles on the 1,500-acre second campus of the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Chitradurga district of Karnataka. The track is expected to be completed by next March, said Umakant Soni, chief executive of the not-for-profit AI and Robotics Technology Park (Artpark). Artpark was established by IISc, with support from AI Foundry. Read More

Funding Calls & Opportunities

Future flight challenge phase 3: strand 2 – The aim of this competition is to fund projects that will deliver the 2024 vision of the Future Flight Challenge and position the UK as a leader in the third revolution of aviation. This competition will build on the success of the 2020 Phase 2 competition and will focus primarily on the demonstration aspects of these novel air vehicles and systems. In Strand 2 projects must focus on developing enabling technologies and cross-cutting systems that support the deployment of these novel air vehicles in UK airspace. Read More 

Future flight challenge phase 3: strand 1 – The aim of this competition is to fund projects that will deliver the 2024 vision of the Future Flight Challenge and position the UK as a leader in the third revolution of aviation. This competition will build on the success of the 2020 Phase 2 competition and will focus primarily on the demonstration aspects of these novel air vehicles and systems. In Strand 1, projects must focus on the demonstration aspects of novel classes of electric or autonomous air vehicles and systems. Read More 

ISCF Transforming Foundation Industry – Small Scale R&D Strand 2 – The Transforming Foundation Industries (TFI) Challenge fund will work with Innovate UK, part of UK Research and Innovation, to invest up to £1.5 million in innovation projects. This funding is from the Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund (ISCF). Global cooperation feasibility studies – Innovate UK, part of UK Research and Innovation, will invest up to £1.5 million to support innovative micro, small or medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to carry out international feasibility studies. The aim of this competition is to increase the international engagement of innovative UK registered SMEs. It will support them in looking to establish or strengthen international research and innovation partnerships and networks and aid them to grow and scale up. Read More 

Innovate UK Smart Grants: August 2021 – UK registered organisations can apply for a share of up to £25 million for game-changing and commercially viable R&D innovation that can significantly impact the UK economy. This funding is from Innovate UK, part of UK Research and Innovation. Whilst projects that overlap with the grand challenge areas are welcomed, this is not a requirement, as we are also keen to support projects in other areas. Read More 

Women in Innovation Awards 2021/22: Round 13 – The aim of this competition is to find women with exciting, innovative ideas and ambitious plans that will inspire others. The awards are for female founders, co-founders or senior decision makers working in businesses that have been operating for at least one year. Applicants must be confident, with the support of an award, that they can make a significant contribution to a pressing societal, environmental or economic challenge through their innovative project. Read More

KTN-iX challenge: Upcycling Protective Plastics from Offshore Wind Farms – The Innovation Exchange programme is working alongside Ørsted to help them reach out to potential innovators that might have solutions involving the upcycling of Transition Piece (TP) covers. Knowledge transfer partnerships (KTP): 2021 to 2022, round 3 – The Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) scheme allows a UK registered business or not-for-profit organisation  to partner with a UK higher education (HE) or further education (FE) institution, RTO or Catapult. Each application must be led by a knowledge base, working with a business partner. Read More 

ISCF smart sustainable plastic packaging: business-led R&D – Innovate UK, part of UK Research and Innovation, will invest up to £7 million from the Smart Sustainable Plastic Packaging Programme in innovation projects. These projects must have the potential to significantly impact the 2025 UK Plastics Pact targets in the long term, and address widely known problems related to plastic packaging for consumer products. Read More

Innovate UK SMART grants May 2021 – Smart is Innovate UK’s ‘Open grant funding’ programme. Innovate UK, part of UK Research and Innovation, is investing up to £25 million in the best game-changing and commercially viable innovative or disruptive ideas.
