Halo launches 5G-based Driverless Car Service in Las Vegas
Halo has launched a commercial driver-less ride-hailing car service in Las Vegas, running on the T-Mobile 5G network in the city. Halo is collaborating with local municipalities to accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) to address traffic congestion and carbon emission challenges by connecting public transit systems to on-demand, driverless cars. New algorithm helps self-driving cars navigate narrow streets
Researchers at Carnegie Mellon University have developed an algorithm to help self-driving cars navigate crowded, narrow streets. Narrow streets can become even worse with parked cars on both sides, leaving limited space for vehicles to travel in both directions. Cars sometimes must duck into a gap between the parked cars or pull over for a car to pass first. Read More

Aurora to develop AV tech with Reinvent
Aurora to apply autonomous tech to trucking and transportation. Aurora is to merge with acquisition firm Reinvent Technology Partners to form Aurora Innovation in a bid to commercialise its autonomous vehicle (AV) technology. Aurora partners and investors such as Baille Gifford and Index Ventures have committed $1 billion and the proposed transaction represents a value of $11bn for the AV firm. Read More

Autonomous driving startup G-PAL bags pre-Series A from Xiaomi and Baidu’s investment arms
Shanghai-based autonomous driving startup G-PAL raised RMB 400 million (USD 61.4 million) from investors including Matrix Partners China, Baidu Ventures, Xiaomi’s Yangtze River Industry Fund, and PwC. The funds will be used to scale the production of the company’s self-driving systems. Read More

Future Flight Cafe: First 19-seat hybrid electric aircraft: August 13th, 2021 – Join us to hear from project 2Zero who aim to demonstrate the first 19-seat hybrid electric aircraft. The project uses a holistic systems approach to simulate and physically demonstrate the viability of electric aircraft in regional air transport operations in a scalable ecosystem using modelling and simulation tools to optimise flights. TFI Small CR&D Competition Briefing: August 17th, 2021 – Find out about the new Transforming Foundation Industries Small Scale Research and Development programme at this competition briefing. Funding Calls & Opportunities
Innovate UK Smart Grants: August 2021 – UK registered organisations can apply for a share of up to £25 million for game-changing and commercially viable R&D innovation that can significantly impact the UK economy. This funding is from Innovate UK, part of UK Research and Innovation. Whilst projects that overlap with the grand challenge areas are welcomed, this is not a requirement, as we are also keen to support projects in other areas. Read More
Women in Innovation Awards 2021/22: Round 13 – The aim of this competition is to find women with exciting, innovative ideas and ambitious plans that will inspire others. The awards are for female founders, co-founders or senior decision makers working in businesses that have been operating for at least one year. Automotive Transformation Fund Expression of Interest: Round 13 – The Automotive Transformation Fund (ATF) is a new Advanced Propulsion Centre (APC) programme that aims to establish a competitive and sustainable UK supply chain. It offers a share of up to £1 billion of funding for capital and associated industrial research projects.
