Halo launches 5G-based Driverless Car Service in Las Vegas

Halo has launched a commercial driver-less ride-hailing car service in Las Vegas, running on the T-Mobile 5G network in the city. Halo is collaborating with local municipalities to accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) to address traffic congestion and carbon emission challenges by connecting public transit systems to on-demand, driverless cars. Read More

Clemson’s Deep Orange 12 team develops self-driving race car

Clemson University is taking autonomous vehicles to the races with Deep Orange 12, a 40-student project that developed a self-driving race car that can go as fast as 180 mph. The prototype car combines innovative technology that allow the car to observe its surroundings and react fast enough to maintain car safety when the car is at high speeds, according to a release from Clemson. Read More

Driverless Plus truck trundles along China highway

Sending a truck trundling down a highway without a human aboard would constitute a major development for most autonomous vehicle companies. For Plus, it’s less a milestone and more a milepost. A self-driving big rig operated by the company drove a 20-mile stretch of the Wufengshan highway near China’s Yangtze River delta last month, the company’s first such truck demonstration conducted in China. Read More

New algorithm helps self-driving cars navigate narrow streets

Researchers at Carnegie Mellon University have developed an algorithm to help self-driving cars navigate crowded, narrow streets. Narrow streets can become even worse with parked cars on both sides, leaving limited space for vehicles to travel in both directions. Cars sometimes must duck into a gap between the parked cars or pull over for a car to pass first. Read More

Aurora to develop AV tech with Reinvent

Aurora to apply autonomous tech to trucking and transportation. Aurora is to merge with acquisition firm Reinvent Technology Partners to form Aurora Innovation in a bid to commercialise its autonomous vehicle (AV) technology. Aurora partners and investors such as Baille Gifford and Index Ventures have committed $1 billion and the proposed transaction represents a value of $11bn for the AV firm. Read More

Autonomous driving startup G-PAL bags pre-Series A from Xiaomi and Baidu’s investment arms

Shanghai-based autonomous driving startup G-PAL raised RMB 400 million (USD 61.4 million) from investors including Matrix Partners China, Baidu Ventures, Xiaomi’s Yangtze River Industry Fund, and PwC. The funds will be used to scale the production of the company’s self-driving systems. Read More

Future Flight Cafe: First 19-seat hybrid electric aircraft: August 13th, 2021 – Join us to hear from project 2Zero who aim to demonstrate the first 19-seat hybrid electric aircraft. The project uses a holistic systems approach to simulate and physically demonstrate the viability of electric aircraft in regional air transport operations in a scalable ecosystem using modelling and simulation tools to optimise flights. Register Here

TFI Small CR&D Competition Briefing: August 17th, 2021 – Find out about the new Transforming Foundation Industries Small Scale Research and Development programme at this competition briefing. COVID-19: Government guidance for employees, employers and businesses

This guidance also provides details of support available to businesses including:

Funding Calls & Opportunities

Innovate UK Smart Grants: August 2021 – UK registered organisations can apply for a share of up to £25 million for game-changing and commercially viable R&D innovation that can significantly impact the UK economy. This funding is from Innovate UK, part of UK Research and Innovation. Whilst projects that overlap with the grand challenge areas are welcomed, this is not a requirement, as we are also keen to support projects in other areas. Read More 

Women in Innovation Awards 2021/22: Round 13 – The aim of this competition is to find women with exciting, innovative ideas and ambitious plans that will inspire others. The awards are for female founders, co-founders or senior decision makers working in businesses that have been operating for at least one year. Applicants must be confident, with the support of an award, that they can make a significant contribution to a pressing societal, environmental or economic challenge through their innovative project. Read More 

Automotive Transformation Fund Expression of Interest: Round 13 – The Automotive Transformation Fund (ATF) is a new Advanced Propulsion Centre (APC) programme that aims to establish a competitive and sustainable UK supply chain. It offers a share of up to £1 billion of funding for capital and associated industrial research projects. This will be to support the industrialisation of a high value, electrified automotive supply at scale in the UK. Read More

Your proposal must describe a measurement or analysis problem, that will help improve your businesses productivity or competitiveness and an estimate of the value to your business of solving it. Driving the electric revolution – building talent for the future – The aim of this competition is to fund several ideas that quickly fill immediate gaps in skills, talent and training for the power electronics, machines and drives (PEMD) industry. KTN-iX challenge: Upcycling Protective Plastics from Offshore Wind Farms – The Innovation Exchange programme is working alongside Ørsted to help them reach out to potential innovators that might have solutions involving the upcycling of Transition Piece (TP) covers. Knowledge transfer partnerships (KTP): 2021 to 2022, round 3 – The Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) scheme allows a UK registered business or not-for-profit organisation  to partner with a UK higher education (HE) or further education (FE) institution, RTO or Catapult. Each application must be led by a knowledge base, working with a business partner. Read More

SBRI – Healthy Ageing Social Ventures industrial research – This is a Small Business Research Initiative (SBRI) competition funded by UKRI. The aim of the competition is to fund organisations to deliver social impact. This is phase 1 of a potential 2-phase competition.Any adoption and implementation of a solution from this competition would be subject to a separate, possible competitive, procurement exercise. Read More  

ISCF smart sustainable plastic packaging: business-led R&D – Innovate UK, part of UK Research and Innovation, will invest up to £7 million from the Smart Sustainable Plastic Packaging Programme in innovation projects. These projects must have the potential to significantly impact the 2025 UK Plastics Pact targets in the long term, and address widely known problems related to plastic packaging for consumer products. Read More

Innovate UK SMART grants May 2021 – Smart is Innovate UK’s ‘Open grant funding’ programme. Innovate UK, part of UK Research and Innovation, is investing up to £25 million in the best game-changing and commercially viable innovative or disruptive ideas.
