Waymo Lobbies UK on Driverless Car Rules

Waymo, has warned against the UK imposing strict rules for self-driving vehicles. The company has submitted comments to a Law Commission consultation about how laws for driverless cars should be written, urging against measures that would limit deployment of the vehicles. It’s a sign that Waymo, owned by Google’s parent company Alphabet, is willing to take a more interventionist approach when it comes to policy-making with regards to driverless cars. Read More

Xiaomi announces an SAE Level 4 autonomous driving system

Xiaomi will be hiring around 500 employees into its newly created division, which will specialize in developing SAE Level 4 self-driving technology for cars. There are six levels in the SAE classification. The Level 0 means no automated features: the driver controls everything. Level 5 implies full automation: the driver is not needed altogether. Read More

Beijing permits self-driving vehicle testing on expressways

Driverless cars will soon hit expressways for testing in Chinese capital Beijing, as the municipal authority has approved the gradual opening of several expressway sections for unmanned vehicles. A 10-km expressway between Beijing’s fifth and sixth ring roads will be opened for such testings first.  Read More

AT&T sign deal to build the first US 5G smart city ‘at scale’

AT&T announced they had signed a letter of intent with JBG Smith, aiming to build the first full-scale smart city in the US. The agreement will see AT&T build a 5G network in a community near at National Landing, a 6.8 million square foot development near Arlington, Virginia. It is hoped that the creation of a smart city at this scale will encourage investors and innovators to the local area. Read More

Google’s parent Alphabet launches Intrinsic: A new software building company

Google’s parent company Alphabet was born to announce a new company called Intrinsic that focuses on building software for industrial robots. The subsidiary is one of Alphabet’s “other bets” and is relatively speculative with a focus on new technologies such as Waymo, Wing (drone courier) and Verily (healthcare and biotechnology). Aurora Leverages Uber Ride Data To Plan High-Speed Robotaxi Service

Automated ride-hail services, a core goal for leading autonomous tech developers Alphabet’s Waymo and GM-backed Cruise, are being readied mainly in low-speed urban and suburban settings as the AI behind the wheel trains to deliver passengers safely while avoiding pedestrians, cyclists, potholes and other vehicles. Read More

Argo AI can now offer the public rides in its autonomous vehicles in California

Argo AI, the autonomous vehicle technology startup backed by Ford and VW, has landed a permit in California that will allow the company to give people free rides in its self-driving vehicles on the state’s public roads.The California Public Utilities Commission issued the so-called Drivered AV pilot permit earlier this month, according to the approved application. Read More

Knowledge transfer partnerships (KTP): 2021 to 2022, round 3 – The Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) scheme allows a UK registered business or not-for-profit organisation  to partner with a UK higher education (HE) or further education (FE) institution, RTO or Catapult. Each application must be led by a knowledge base, working with a business partner. Read More

SBRI – Healthy Ageing Social Ventures industrial research – This is a Small Business Research Initiative (SBRI) competition funded by UKRI. CCAV – Advancing safely to full vehicle automation – UK registered businesses can apply for a share of up to £1.5 million for up to three automated vehicle projects. This funding is from the Department for Transport (DfT) and the Centre for Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CCAV). The aim of this competition is to continue development of technologies and assurance processes to enable safe use of fully automated vehicles. Read More

ISCF smart sustainable plastic packaging: business-led R&D – Innovate UK, part of UK Research and Innovation, will invest up to £7 million from the Smart Sustainable Plastic Packaging Programme in innovation projects. These projects must have the potential to significantly impact the 2025 UK Plastics Pact targets in the long term, and address widely known problems related to plastic packaging for consumer products. Read More

Innovate UK SMART grants May 2021 – Smart is Innovate UK’s ‘Open grant funding’ programme. Innovate UK, part of UK Research and Innovation, is investing up to £25 million in the best game-changing and commercially viable innovative or disruptive ideas.
