Self-driving buses, taxis to hit roads in Seoul in October

It may be possible to summon a self-driving car with a mobile taxi app in Seoul’s Sangam neighborhood starting in October. The Seoul government announced Tuesday that it’s looking for companies to provide autonomous vehicle services in the Sangam neighborhood. The available services are call taxis and self-driving buses that will operate in the trial area. Read More

Intel’s Mobileye begins testing autonomous vehicles in New York City

Mobileye,  is now testing its AVs in New York City, a difficult and rare move given the state’s restrictions around such testing. The announcement was made by Amnon Shashua, president and CEO of the Intel-owned company. Shashua said the company is currently testing two autonomous vehicles in New York City, but plans to increase that number to seven “in the next few months.” Read More

Ford’s self-driving cars will be available on Lyft’s platform in Miami and Austin

Lyft customers in Miami will be able hail a robotaxi from Argo AI, an AV startup backed by Ford and Volkswagen, by the end of the year, the companies announced. Next year, riders in Austin, Texas, will be able to do the same. It’s the latest move to make more autonomous vehicles available for public use after initial predictions about the wide-scale availability of AVs failed to materialize. Read More

Huawei trademarks AUTOWARE for autonomous driving system

A new trademark application has just surfaced that Huawei registers the name “Autoware.” The international classification involves scientific instruments, transportation vehicles, and design research. The current trademark status is “application for registration.” “Autoware” is the world’s first “integrated” open source software for auto-driving cars. Read More

GM, Cruise suing to stop Ford from using the name ‘BlueCruise’

General Motors has filed a lawsuit to try to prevent Ford from using the name “BlueCruise” for the hands-free driving feature it announced earlier this year. GM claims the name is too close Super Cruise, the name of is own hands-free driving technology introduced in 2017, and to its autonomous vehicle subsidiary Cruise. GM is suing Ford for trademark infringement and unspecified damages. Read More

Samsung’s self-driving lidar clears first milestone

Samsung Electronics has reached the first milestone in the development of its first-ever lidar for autonomous driving applications. The technology, whose existence was entirely unknown until today, is said to be on course for a commercial launch in 2026. Sources close to the Seoul-based tech giant claim the solution in question will have a minimal physical footprint relative to existing market alternatives. Tesla Stock Slips as Autonomous Driving Hardware Update Draws Ire

Tesla (TSLA) – Get Report shares traded lower in premarket trading on Monday after the electric carmaker unveiled a subscription option for its Full Self-Driving package that some Tesla drivers may have to pay an extra $1,500 for a new chip to be installed to use. Tesla over the weekend unveiled a $199-a-month subscription plan for its Full Self-Driving, or FSD package, rather than a $10,000 up-front fee which to date was the only option offered to enable it. Read More

Bioeconomy Cluster Builder: Applications of Biomass and Processing By- products: July 29th, 2021 – This will be a closed event and expressions of interest are invited from stakeholders to participate in targeted breakout rooms that will address these topics. Focus areas for these sessions will be aligned with our May workshop around non-food crops, waste biomass and harnessing the potential products from the distilling sector. CCAV – Advancing safely to full vehicle automation – UK registered businesses can apply for a share of up to £1.5 million for up to three automated vehicle projects. This funding is from the Department for Transport (DfT) and the Centre for Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CCAV). The aim of this competition is to continue development of technologies and assurance processes to enable safe use of fully automated vehicles. Read More

ISCF smart sustainable plastic packaging: business-led R&D – Innovate UK, part of UK Research and Innovation, will invest up to £7 million from the Smart Sustainable Plastic Packaging Programme in innovation projects. These projects must have the potential to significantly impact the 2025 UK Plastics Pact targets in the long term, and address widely known problems related to plastic packaging for consumer products. Read More

Innovate UK SMART grants May 2021 – Smart is Innovate UK’s ‘Open grant funding’ programme. Innovate UK, part of UK Research and Innovation, is investing up to £25 million in the best game-changing and commercially viable innovative or disruptive ideas.
