Cleveron conducts driving exams with semi-autonomous last-mile delivery vehicle

Estonian technology company Cleveron has partnered with LRK Driving School to conduct what it describes as the world’s first driving exams for an unmanned semi-autonomous car. The exams were carried out using Cleveron’s last-mile delivery vehicle, the Cleveron 701. All four specialists from Cleveron passed the exam and received the world’s first teleoperated vehicle certificates. Read More

Tesla Vision to Be Capable of Recognizing Hand Signals, Emergency Vehicle Lights

According to Elon Musk, Tesla Vision will soon be capable of recognizing hand signals, emergency vehicle lights, other vehicles’ turn signals, and other vehicles’ hazard light signals. This announcement comes after one Tesla owner says that his vehicle is now capable of recognizing that other vehicles are stopped with brake lights on. Read More

Xiaomi Hires More People for Autonomous Driving

Xiaomi increased the number of job positions from 24 to 25, all of which are in the field of autonomous driving. Xiaomi Corporation published 20 new positions on its jobs page related to autonomous driving, making it the first time a large-scale job posting related to autonomous driving has been released since the official announcement of the company’s expansion into vehicle sector. Read More

Germany Opens Roads to Autonomous Vehicles

There’s no small number of complex pieces that need to fit into place to realize the dream of autonomous vehicles. Now, in Germany, where both houses of the federal parliament have passed a bill amending the relevant laws in order to allow Level 4 autonomous vehicles to operate on the country’s roadways. Characterized as “high automation,” Level 4 is the second highest level of autonomy identified by the Society of Automobile Engineers (SAE). Read More

AutoX Unveils Full Self-Driving System Powered by NVIDIA DRIVE

Your robotaxi is arriving soon. Self-driving startup AutoX took the wraps off its full self-driving system — dubbed “Gen5” — this week. The autonomous driving platform, which is specifically designed for robotaxis, uses NVIDIA DRIVE automotive-grade GPUs to reach up to 2,200 trillion operations per second (TOPS) of AI compute performance. Read More

Texan city to deploy intelligent traffic system from Velodyne Lidar

Velodyne Lidar announced that it will deploy a lidar-based traffic-monitoring system to a dangerous intersection in Austin.  The system will create real-time 3D maps of roads and intersections, replacing the current combination of inductive loop detectors, cameras, and radar. Velodyne has joined Nvidia’s Metropolis program and will use Nvidia Jetson AGX Xavier edge processors to interpret the lidar data. Read More

Toyota’s Woven Planet acquires HD mapping startup Carmera

Woven Planet Holdings — an entity created by Toyota to invest in, develop and eventually bring future of transportation technologies like automated driving to market — has acquired HD mapping startup Carmera for an undisclosed amount. The announcement comes less than two months since Woven Planet Holdings acquired Lyft’s autonomous vehicle unit known as Level 5 for $550 million. Read More

CCAV – Advancing safely to full vehicle automation – UK registered businesses can apply for a share of up to £1.5 million for up to three automated vehicle projects. This funding is from the Department for Transport (DfT) and the Centre for Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CCAV). The aim of this competition is to continue development of technologies and assurance processes to enable safe use of fully automated vehicles. Read More

Automotive Transformation Fund Expression of Interest: Round 12 – The Automotive Transformation Fund (ATF) is a new programme that aims to establish a competitive and sustainable UK supply chain. It offers a share of up to £1 billion of funding for capital and associated industrial research projects. This will be to support the industrialisation of a high value, electrified automotive supply at scale in the UK. Read More

ISCF smart sustainable plastic packaging: business-led R&D – Innovate UK, part of UK Research and Innovation, will invest up to £7 million from the Smart Sustainable Plastic Packaging Programme in innovation projects. These projects must have the potential to significantly impact the 2025 UK Plastics Pact targets in the long term, and address widely known problems related to plastic packaging for consumer products. Read More

Innovate UK SMART grants May 2021 – Smart is Innovate UK’s ‘Open grant funding’ programme. Innovate UK, part of UK Research and Innovation, is investing up to £25 million in the best game-changing and commercially viable innovative or disruptive ideas. All proposals must be business focused. All applicants are required to complete the EDI survey. Applicants are also prompted to consider EDI as part of the application process. Read More
