Flying car completes test flight between airports
A prototype flying car has completed a 35-minute flight between international airports in Nitra and Bratislava, Slovakia. The hybrid car-aircraft, AirCar, is equipped with a BMW engine and runs on regular petrol-pump fuel. Its creator, Prof Stefan Klein, said it could fly about 1,000km (600 miles), at a height of 8,200ft (2,500m), and had clocked up 40 hours in the air so far. It takes two minutes and 15 seconds to transform from car into aircraft. Read More

Shenzhen pushes forward legislation on autonomous vehicles

Sense Photonics launches new platform for autonomous vehicle adoption
The company, which has offices in San Francisco, Durham, and Edinburgh, as well as other cities across the globe, shared in a statement that its automotive Lidar platform is now available. The platform relies on patented technology, including a VCSEL laser emitter and SPAD receiver technologies, resulting in delivering a rich data point cloud with high points per second, that the company said is the richest of any automotive Lidar system. Volvo confirms next-gen XC90 Electric with Lidar technology
The Swedish automaker announces in a press release that the upcoming next-generation electric Volvo XC90 will arrive with state-of-the-art sensors and LiDAR technology. While not mentioned, the next XC90 could continue with the Recharge nomenclature, in line with the other all-electric models, the C40 Recharge and XC40 Recharge. The LiDAR safety and convenience tech,was developed with Luminar. Read More

Citymesh acquires Sigfox IoT network operator to offer services ‘from 0G to 5G’
Belgian telecoms operator Citymesh has acquired local Sigfox IoT network operator ENGIE M2M to enable it to offer services all the way “from 0G to 5G”. Sigfox is a 0G network ideally suited for IoT deployments because of its ultra-low power consumption and long-range. In Belgium alone, the Sigfox network connects over 250,000 devices. Citymesh has both a 4G and 5G license in Belgium and specialises in large-scale wireless networks. Read More

Foton Motor in early stage of cooperation with Huawei on autonomous driving business
Foton Motor recently revealed that it is carrying out preliminary cooperation with Huawei for autonomous driving business. Meanwhile, both parties are discussing technologies related to smart cockpit, Ethernet, and radar as part of preparations for seeking collaboration projects in the future. Foton Motor and Huawei entered into a strategic partnership to co-work on a host of businesses. Read More

Funding Calls & Opportunities
CCAV – Advancing safely to full vehicle automation – UK registered businesses can apply for a share of up to £1.5 million for up to three automated vehicle projects. This funding is from the Department for Transport (DfT) and the Centre for Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CCAV). The aim of this competition is to continue development of technologies and assurance processes to enable safe use of fully automated vehicles. Read More
Automotive Transformation Fund Expression of Interest: Round 12 – The Automotive Transformation Fund (ATF) is a new programme that aims to establish a competitive and sustainable UK supply chain. It offers a share of up to £1 billion of funding for capital and associated industrial research projects. This will be to support the industrialisation of a high value, electrified automotive supply at scale in the UK. Read More
ISCF smart sustainable plastic packaging: business-led R&D – Innovate UK, part of UK Research and Innovation, will invest up to £7 million from the Smart Sustainable Plastic Packaging Programme in innovation projects. These projects must have the potential to significantly impact the 2025 UK Plastics Pact targets in the long term, and address widely known problems related to plastic packaging for consumer products. Young Innovators Awards 2021/22 – Young people can apply for an award to make their business idea a reality, which includes a grant for £5,000, a living allowance, and tailored business support. This competition is open to sole applicants only. The aim of this competition is to find a new group of young innovators that, with our help, can turn their great ideas into successful businesses. Innovate UK SMART grants May 2021 – Smart is Innovate UK’s ‘Open grant funding’ programme. Innovate UK, part of UK Research and Innovation, is investing up to £25 million in the best game-changing and commercially viable innovative or disruptive ideas. All proposals must be business focused. All applicants are required to complete the EDI survey. Applicants are also prompted to consider EDI as part of the application process. Read More
IETF energy efficiency and decarbonisation studies, Spring 2021- Organisations can apply for a share of up to £40 million to carry out feasibility and engineering studies into energy efficiency and decarbonisation technologies for industrial processes. This competition is open to single applicants and collaborations. Read More
IETF deployment of energy efficiency technologies, Spring 2021- This competition aims to support the commercial roll out and permanent installation of technologies at industrial sites. This is the second round of the IETF Phase 1 competition. In this strand you must be an industrial business of any size to apply. You can apply on your own or in collaboration with other organisations. Your project must take place at a manufacturing site or data centre in England, Wales or Northern Ireland and be led by the operator of that site. Read More
