Ford and Hermes trial self-driving delivery vans in the UK

UK delivery company Hermes will be testing out a customised Ford (F) van that appears to be driverless, to see how these can benefit its operations. The partnership is part of Ford’s new Self-Driving Vehicle Research Programme designed for businesses in Europe. “Doorstep deliveries are more a part of our lives than ever before – but the way we receive those parcels could be undergoing a change,” said Ford. Read More

Xiaomi speeds expansion in autonomous driving

Xiaomi Corp, which is investing US$10 billion over 10 years in autonomous driving and car manufacture, is speeding up business expansion with patent applications, aggressive recruitment and investment. It has applied for 446 smart driving related patents globally, covering wireless communication, autonomous driving, vehicle control, Internet of Vehicles and gesture control.  Read More

Australian trial of Toyota Lexus self-driving cars coming to Melbourne

The no-hands commute is edging closer to reality as Australian trials investigate ways of making cars talk to each other, as well as buses, trams and traffic signs. An Australian-first trial of connected vehicles will establish a virtual warning system across public transport, emergency vehicles, infrastructure and specially modified Lexus luxury cars in Melbourne’s Carlton next month. Read More

Tesla’s ‘Dojo’ supercomputer will train its vision-centric autonomous tech

Tesla has gone all-in on vision-only autonomous driving, to the point of even phasing out radar sensors in some of its EVs. Tesla  senior director of AI Andrej Karpathy has explained how it’s planning to do this by using an in-house supercomputer called “Dojo,” as TechCrunch has reported. Karparthy explained that with vision-only tech, computers must respond to new environments with the same speed and acuity as a human. Read More

Seamless cross-border 5G connectivity achieved in autonomous cars

Swedish luxury automobile manufacturer Volvo Cars and leading ICT provider Ericsson have taken an important step towards achieving seamless cross-border 5G connectivity in vehicles. Partners in the EU-backed 5GCroCo project, the two companies successfully tested the handover of connected cars between two national mobile 5G networks. Read More

Amazon ordered 1,000 self-driving truck systems from new startup

Amazon is hoping that driver-less autonomous trucks will someday power its vast delivery network. According to Bloomberg, the company has placed an order for 1,000 autonomous driving systems from Plus, a startup founded in 2016 to disrupt the long-haul trucking industry with self-driving technology. It’s no secret that Amazon is building its own logistics network to rival the likes of UPS and FedEx. Read More

This guidance also provides details of support available to businesses including:

ISCF smart sustainable plastic packaging: business-led R&D – Innovate UK, part of UK Research and Innovation, will invest up to £7 million from the Smart Sustainable Plastic Packaging Programme in innovation projects. These projects must have the potential to significantly impact the 2025 UK Plastics Pact targets in the long term, and address widely known problems related to plastic packaging for consumer products. Read More

SBRI Competition – Fusion Industry Challenges – This is a Small Business Research Initiative (SBRI) competition funded by the UK Atomic Energy Authority. The aim of the competition is to develop solutions to fusion energy challenges in two key priority areas. Innovate UK SMART grants May 2021 – Smart is Innovate UK’s ‘Open grant funding’ programme. Innovate UK, part of UK Research and Innovation, is investing up to £25 million in the best game-changing and commercially viable innovative or disruptive ideas. IETF energy efficiency and decarbonisation studies, Spring 2021- Organisations can apply for a share of up to £40 million to carry out feasibility and engineering studies into energy efficiency and decarbonisation technologies for industrial processes. IETF deployment of energy efficiency technologies, Spring 2021-  This competition aims to support the commercial roll out and permanent installation of technologies at industrial sites. This is the second round of the IETF Phase 1 competition. In this strand you must be an industrial business of any size to apply. You can apply on your own or in collaboration with other organisations. Your project must take place at a manufacturing site or data centre in England, Wales or Northern Ireland and be led by the operator of that site. Read More

Coventry University: Ph.D. Research Scholar: Multi-Objective Optimisation in Transport System – This PhD research aims to develop a new multi-objective optimisation framework supporting complex transport operations, with a focus on responsive optimisation for multi-modal MaaS based solutions that include demand-responsive transport. The framework will evolve from Conigital’s existing meta-heuristic algorithm currently applied to the ConOP™ asset management platform. Coventry University: Ph.D. Research Scholar: Secure Automotive OTA for Safety-critical Components – This PhD project is in collaboration with Conigital, who have embarked on a mission to disrupt the transport industry through a vision of greener, more efficient mobility for all. This PhD project aims to develop and demonstrate a secure-by-design methodology for an OTA deployment using a prototyped system. It investigates the current state-of-the-art in design flaws and secure design practices for industry-adopted automotive OTA systems. Apply
