Project Endeavour arrives in Birmingham this week, with the UK’s second largest city hosting the next phase of autonomous vehicle trials on public roads. California Approves A Pilot Program For Driverless Rides

The California Public Utilities Commission announced Friday that Cruise, a self-driving car service out of San Francisco, has been authorized to participate in the state’s first pilot program to provide driverless ride services to the public. The company is not allowed to charge passengers for rides. Cruise is the only company approved for giving rides to passengers without a safety driver on board. Read More

VW may offer pay-per-use autonomous driving

Volkswagen is considering offering autonomous driving on a pay-per-use basis, one of the brand’s board members said in a newspaper interview. We assume a price of around seven euros per hour. So if you do not want to drive yourself for three hours you can pay 21 euros to get it done,” Zellmer said, adding that way autonomous driving would become available for everyone. Read More

NuPort Brings Autonomous Trucking to Toronto Roads 

Autonomous truck technology is making its way across the Great White North. Self-driving trucking startup NuPort Robotics is leveraging NVIDIA DRIVE to develop autonomous driving systems for middle-mile short-haul routes. The Canada-based company is working with the Ontario government as well as Canadian Tire on a two-year pilot project to accelerate the commercial deployment of this technology. Read More

Volkswagen announces ‘new DNA’, teases fully autonomous cars

Volkswagen has announced what it calls its ‘new DNA’, a proprietary software solution that will provide owners of VW-badged EVs with unique benefits and ultimately enable the creation of completely self-driving vehicles. The battery cars already present in Europe will not just continue getting over-the-air updates, but will unlock new features as they become available. Read More

Foodpanda partners startups to trial food delivery via autonomous robots

Food delivery platform foodpanda announced that it has partnered with three autonomous robot startups to advance the progress of driverless deliveries in Singapore. They include Nanyang Technological University’s (NTU) student startup, Whizz Mobility; local robotics company OTSAW; and Chinese autonomous vehicle startup Neolix. The trials will be rolled out sequentially across separate locations in Singapore. Read More

Innovate UK SMART grants May 2021 – Smart is Innovate UK’s ‘Open grant funding’ programme. Innovate UK, part of UK Research and Innovation, is investing up to £25 million in the best game-changing and commercially viable innovative or disruptive ideas. All proposals must be business focused. All applicants are required to complete the EDI survey. Applicants are also prompted to consider EDI as part of the application process. Read More

Knowledge transfer partnerships (KTP): 2021 to 2022, round 2 – UK registered academic institutions, RTOs or Catapults can apply for a share of up to £6 million to fund innovation projects with businesses or not-for-profits. This new partnership brings new skills and the latest academic thinking into the business partner to deliver a specific, strategic innovation project. The knowledge base partner will recruit 1 or 2 graduates (known as ‘associates’) to work on the project. Each application must be led by a knowledge base, working with a business partner. Read More

IETF energy efficiency and decarbonisation studies, Spring 2021- Organisations can apply for a share of up to £40 million to carry out feasibility and engineering studies into energy efficiency and decarbonisation technologies for industrial processes. This competition is open to single applicants and collaborations. Read More

IETF deployment of energy efficiency technologies, Spring 2021-  This competition aims to support the commercial roll out and permanent installation of technologies at industrial sites. This is the second round of the IETF Phase 1 competition. In this strand you must be an industrial business of any size to apply. You can apply on your own or in collaboration with other organisations. Your project must take place at a manufacturing site or data centre in England, Wales or Northern Ireland and be led by the operator of that site. Read More
