Volkswagen ID Buzz

VW to start testing fleet of self-driving Argo AI-equipped ID Buzz vans within months

Volkswagen will begin testing its Argo AI-powered autonomous vehicle service in Germany within the next few months, with a view to launch an autonomous commercial delivery and ride-share service by 2025. The German manufacturer will use its own ID.Buzz vans fitted with technology from US-based start-up company Argo AI. Earlier this year, Argo and VW developed a prototype that used VW’s MEB electric vehicle architecture. Read More

Legislators Show Green Light to Russian AV Industry

The legislative work on the plan, initiated in mid-2020, was given a powerful boost early this year, the federal ministry of transportation stated in a press release back in March. The program “will set the regulatory conditions for inclusion of autonomous vehicles into the transportation system in the period from 2021 to 2024” in a way that “ensures safety of road users and compliance with the existing norms and rules”. Read More

Self-driving e-boats will sail on Amsterdam canals

Amsterdam didn’t have to look very far when searching for a way to ease traffic on its congested streets. The Dutch capital’s canals were used for transport long before cars and trucks powered by polluting internal combustion engines began clogging its narrow roads. The city’s waterways are to start hosting prototypes of futuristic boats – small, fully-autonomous electric vessels – to carry out tasks including transporting passengers and picking up garbage.  Read More

Alphabet’s Waymo partners with Google Maps to offer autonomous rides

Alphabet Inc’s self-driving unit Waymo said it had partnered with Google’s Maps to let users book fully autonomous ride-hailing services through the app. The service, called Waymo One, will be added in the “ride-sharing and transit” tabs of the Maps app, Waymo said.  Waymo, formed in 2009 as a project within Alphabet’s Google unit, is widely considered the leader in developing self-driving technology. Read More

Germany Takes Aim at Driverless Tech Dominance

Germany is the first country in the world to legalize fully autonomous vehicles on public roads. The landmark legislation passed both the lower and upper chambers of Germany’s parliament last week with a comfortable majority. The legislation will allow Level 4 autonomous vehicles to operate on public roads in Germany without drivers behind the wheel and without obtaining special permits.  Read More

Aviva and Darwin partner for autonomous vehicles using O2 5G

The facility, Darwin SatCom Lab, was opened in Harwell Science and Innovation Campus in Oxfordshire, allowing companies to explore solutions for connected and autonomous vehicles (CAVs) using both 5G and satellite communication. Now, a new five-year partnership between Avival and Darwin innovation group will make use of these facilities to trial an autonomous shuttle. Read More

Young Innovators Awards 2021/22 – Young people can apply for an award to make their business idea a reality, which includes a grant for £5,000, a living allowance, and tailored business support. This competition is open to sole applicants only. The aim of this competition is to find a new group of young innovators that, with our help, can turn their great ideas into successful businesses. Read More

Innovate UK SMART grants May 2021 – Smart is Innovate UK’s ‘Open grant funding’ programme. Innovate UK, part of UK Research and Innovation, is investing up to £25 million in the best game-changing and commercially viable innovative or disruptive ideas. All proposals must be business focused. All applicants are required to complete the EDI survey. Applicants are also prompted to consider EDI as part of the application process. Read More

Knowledge transfer partnerships (KTP): 2021 to 2022, round 2 – UK registered academic institutions, RTOs or Catapults can apply for a share of up to £6 million to fund innovation projects with businesses or not-for-profits. This new partnership brings new skills and the latest academic thinking into the business partner to deliver a specific, strategic innovation project. The knowledge base partner will recruit 1 or 2 graduates (known as ‘associates’) to work on the project. Each application must be led by a knowledge base, working with a business partner. Read More

Innovation in time dissemination and application – UK registered organisations can apply for a share of up to £2 million for business-led innovation in resilient time, frequency and synchronisation. This funding is from the Strategic Priorities Fund (SPF). Your proposal must deliver a feasibility study for an innovative development and demonstrate a route to market. This is the first of two associated competitions funded from the Strategic Priorities Fund (SPF) as part of the National Timing Centre programme, led by NPL. Read More

Driving the Electric Revolution: Supply Chains for Net Zero – UK registered businesses of any size can apply for a share of up to £22 million for innovation projects focused on supply chain development for power electronics, electric machines and drives. The aim of this competition is to facilitate the UK’s niche and volume supply chain and manufacturing capability growth in power electronics, machines and drives (PEMD). Read More

IETF energy efficiency and decarbonisation studies, Spring 2021- Organisations can apply for a share of up to £40 million to carry out feasibility and engineering studies into energy efficiency and decarbonisation technologies for industrial processes. This competition is open to single applicants and collaborations. Read More

IETF deployment of energy efficiency technologies, Spring 2021-  This competition aims to support the commercial roll out and permanent installation of technologies at industrial sites. This is the second round of the IETF Phase 1 competition. In this strand you must be an industrial business of any size to apply. You can apply on your own or in collaboration with other organisations. Your project must take place at a manufacturing site or data centre in England, Wales or Northern Ireland and be led by the operator of that site. Read More
