The introduction of autonomous vehicles will redefine cities of the future.

There are visions of the “Smart cities’. ’Many manufacturers are already investing in these cities. Designs of roads and parking spaces of these cities are expected to change once vehicles are fully autonomous.

The main ideas in smart city infrastructure are ridesharing. This will also help in reducing greenhouse emissions. These concepts will make our cities smart and will provide us with safe travels. Autonomous vehicles will not require human help to make decisions. According to studies, humans can be irrational in decision making sometimes, Use of autonomous vehicles will decrease road crashes.

94 per cent of serious car crashes are due to human error, according to USA National Highway Traffic Administration.

Autonomous vehicles are expected to have systems to interact with nearby smart cities. These interactions include sensors, recharging points, other cars, mobile connections. Due to the advanced 5g network, the global market revenue of self-driving vehicles is expected to reach $556.67 billion by 2026. All these emerging technologies will work together to make cities of the future.

Challenges for smart cities and autonomous vehicles :

There is a need for proper infrastructure for autonomous vehicles. City authorities will have to work with vehicle manufacturers to make new infrastructure. Some changes that can be created in cities are :

As autonomous vehicles can connect with sensors, we need sensors on roadsides for vehicles to track their pathway. To prepare for the future these sensors are important, these can be installed on sidewalks, lanes etc.

These networks require a lot of infrastructures, but advanced 5g networks will make self-driving cars more efficient

As we already know that autonomous vehicle takes help from image recognition to see road signs. We can use machine-readable signs, using embedded codes that can be transmitted.

Markings on lanes are important for Autonomous vehicles to work properly. These vehicles can be designed to be specific for lanes and instead of specific lanes for buses and heavy vehicles, Autonomous vehicles can be programmed to leave a lane open when a bus is passing by.

Forthcoming lifestyle Changes in cities:

Autonomous vehicles are going to affect our way of travel as well as it will provide new life to our cities and these vehicles will help us achieve more efficient mobility in the future.

Thanks to the AV revolution city residents will have more space to use, there will be lesser risks for pedestrians as they have in urban places. Smart cities and autonomous vehicles will add to a good quality of life.
