Toyota VC invests in AI startups

Apple might ditch automakers in favor of Foxconn
The Apple Car could be made in the same way and by the same people, that Apple makes the iPhone. A new report from Bloomberg claims that, following from halted talks with car companies, Apple may rely on manufacturing partners it has existing relationships with to build its car. Apple could simply open its own factories to build cars, but that would take a huge amount of work and investment that the company’s not done before. Read More

Luminar strikes deal with Volvo to offer self-driving system to automakers
Luminar Technologies Inc. said on Thursday it had struck a deal with the self-driving software subsidiary of Volvo Cars to offer a combination hardware-software system to other automakers. The U.S. lidar company said the agreement was with Zenseact, the self-driving software subsidiary of the Swedish automaker. Volvo plans to use Luminar’s sensors in its vehicles with production starting next year. Read More

Munich Airport’s LabCampus attracts autonomous vehicle technology pioneer
Munich Airport’s LabCampus innovation centre will shortly have a new tenant – one of the world’s leading technology companies in the autonomous driving sector, Argo AI, which is expected to test and develop vehicles on the site. Under the contractual agreement that now, with the agency and consulting services of CBRE GmbH, has been signed, Argo AI will build a test track at Munich Airport . The autonomously driven vehicles are to be tested under realistic conditions in various traffic situations on the test track. Read More

Boeing Autonomous Drone Piloted by AI Successfully Completes First Flight
Boeing’s first autonomous drone powered by artificial intelligence, the Loyal Wingman, has just successfully completed its first flight in collaboration with the Australian army. In the future it could also help in various civilian missions. With on-board artificial intelligence, the aircraft can make decisions in flight even faster than a human on the ground responsible for controlling it. Read More

Zoox expects Amazon-backed self-driving car “a lot sooner than people imagine”
Aicha Evans, CEO of American autonomous vehicle company Zoox, said in an interview with Bloomberg that commercial launch of its autonomous urban transport vehicle won’t happen next year, but it will happen “a lot sooner than people imagine.” Zoox was bought out by Amazon last year in a deal worth a reported $US1.2 billion ($AU1.45 billion). Self-Driving Cars To Be Especially Welcomed In “Zoom Towns”
The Zoom Town reference is the catchy new phrase that cleverly brings together the notion of “Zoom” as in being able to work remotely (promulgated by the now-ubiquitous Zoom-like online capabilities), and combined with the homespun “Town” indication. The “Town” part suggests that as a remote worker, you can opt to live wherever you might wish to do so and not have to be residing in a major city for purposes of performing your job. Read More

CertiCAV Final Showcase: Assuring the safety of highly automated vehicles: March 15th 2021 – Working for the Department for Transport, the Connected Places Catapult in collaboration with WMG – The University of Warwick, have explored topics including the information a manufacturer would be expected to present, how performance requirements may be developed and measured, best practice for HAV verification & validation, and finally the activities an independent authority may conduct to assure conformance to the requirements. Approaches to mitigate against stranded diesel assets – This challenge is one of two being developed and promoted at this time. A second challenge is exploring how to improve the efficiency of shore derived power to the portside operations and visiting ships. An effective means to reduce pollution and decarbonise activity in the short to medium term will be to reduce demand and eventually replace fossil fuels as the means to derive energy to power mobility. IETF energy efficiency and decarbonisation studies, Spring 2021- Organisations can apply for a share of up to £40 million to carry out feasibility and engineering studies into energy efficiency and decarbonisation technologies for industrial processes. IETF deployment of energy efficiency technologies, Spring 2021- This competition aims to support the commercial roll out and permanent installation of technologies at industrial sites. This is the second round of the IETF Phase 1 competition. In this strand you must be an industrial business of any size to apply. You can apply on your own or in collaboration with other organisations. Your project must take place at a manufacturing site or data centre in England, Wales or Northern Ireland and be led by the operator of that site. Read More
