UK 5G pilot will transform a 40-tonne HGV into an autonomous vehicle
The project, based in Sunderland, will use 5G technology in an “operational automotive environment” for the very first time in the UK, according to the launch announcement, with North, a leading IoT company in the UK, winning the job to design, build and support the £4.9m project. The project, taking place over the next 12-18 months, will see North partner with Nokia, in a partnership which, it is hoped, will establish the North East as a global leader in advanced logistics. Autonomous Legislation Opens US Roads
It will allow companies invested in autonomous driving vehicles to put 100,000 cars on US roads, as well as providing them with exemptions to safety guidelines that are not applicable to the technology. In order to improve performance of driverless cars and the experience of riding in one, the vehicle itself will be gathering data to essentially learn more about the humans inside, such as what your preferred activity is while riding to work. Honda launches level 3 autonomous technology in Japan
Honda has launched a new package of semi-autonomous driver assistance functions, which it says is the first ‘level 3’ autonomous driving system to be given the legal go-ahead by Japanese authorities. The driver assistance technology takes a step beyond the level two systems widely on sale today by supporting hands-off autonomous driving under certain conditions, such as heavy traffic or when travelling on the motorway – other systems require hands on the steering wheel. Japan Airlines to operate autonomous towing tractors at Narita airport
Japan Airlines (JAL) announced the decision to officially launch and operate autonomous towing tractors to transport checked-in baggage at Narita airport. Going forward, JAL will continue to cooperate with public and private sectors to realize driverless operation within the restricted areas of the airport. MIT Driverless is using autonomous racing to advance its research
The Indy Autonomous Challenge (IAC) is the world’s first head-to-head, high-speed autonomous race. For MIT Driverless, it offers a chance to grab a piece of the US$1.5m purse while outmaneuvering fellow university innovators on what is arguably the most iconic racecourse. The MIT Driverless approach to autonomous vehicle racing, particularly as it pertains to architecture and data processing. Read More

Volkswagen ID Buzz concept to become autonomous commercial vehicle
Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles will be the first VW Group brand to offer a vehicle with autonomous driving capability. The ID Buzz concept, first previewed as a replacement for the iconic VW Camper, will be introduced as a fully electric commercial vehicle and will be available with autonomous driving capability. VW expects the system will be ready for ‘traffic use’ by 2025. Read More

Autonomous Vehicles to Promote Advanced Data Use across the GBA
Many of the Fintech and eHealth technologies that depend upon the transmission of personal data across the Greater Bay Area (“GBA”) borders face regulatory challenges. These problems should be markedly less pronounced, however, in the field of autonomous vehicles. New Mexico Takes Steps Toward Embracing Autonomous Vehicles
Autonomous vehicles can already be seen on some roads in New Mexico as two companies test vehicles. Now legislators have introduced a bill that sponsor state Rep. Patty Lundstrom (D-Gallup) says would set up in statute the authority to regulate and give guidance to the emerging industry. This bill would require companies wishing to test autonomous vehicles in New Mexico to provide five days’ notice to the New Mexico Department of Transportation. Read More

Driving the Electric Revolution: Supply Chains for Net Zero – UK registered businesses of any size can apply for a share of up to £22 million for innovation projects focused on supply chain development for power electronics, electric machines and drives. KTN-iX: Solutions to Understand Vehicle Use and Charging Requirements – With 102 fire stations and an unpredictable incident schedule there is considerable complexity in optimising scheduling and charging of vehicles while maintaining the high level of service. LFB is assessing how its heavy appliances will recharge – this includes installing dedicated charging at stations, the use of public sites as well as at the site of prolonged incidents. Read More
Approaches to mitigate against stranded diesel assets – This challenge is one of two being developed and promoted at this time. A second challenge is exploring how to improve the efficiency of shore derived power to the portside operations and visiting ships. An effective means to reduce pollution and decarbonise activity in the short to medium term will be to reduce demand and eventually replace fossil fuels as the means to derive energy to power mobility. Zero Emission Pumping Power for Emergency Vehicles – One of the biggest challenges in this transition is the development of the Zero Emission Pumping Appliance (commonly known as a Fire Engine) due to the technical requirements. The pumping appliance is also one of the most important vehicles in LFB’s fleet due to its function, flexibility and numbers (each station has at least one appliance). Competition: Uncrewed Underwater Vehicle Testbed – Up to £20k will be made available to innovators who are selected from this competition, for travel and subsistence costs, and the costs of any integration and removal time. Approaches to delivering energy supplies to Ships in Port – Efficient energy management – Looking for innovative solutions for delivering energy efficiently to ships whilst in port: solutions must consider the availability of energy supply and the different demands of ships and port side equipment to explore efficient means of managing the electrical energy supplies, which are not infinite and are often in high demand. IETF energy efficiency and decarbonisation studies, Spring 2021- Organisations can apply for a share of up to £40 million to carry out feasibility and engineering studies into energy efficiency and decarbonisation technologies for industrial processes. IETF deployment of energy efficiency technologies, Spring 2021- This competition aims to support the commercial roll out and permanent installation of technologies at industrial sites. This is the second round of the IETF Phase 1 competition. In this strand you must be an industrial business of any size to apply. You can apply on your own or in collaboration with other organisations. Your project must take place at a manufacturing site or data centre in England, Wales or Northern Ireland and be led by the operator of that site. Read More
Farming Innovation Pathways (FIP) – industrial research – The aim of this competition is to support the development of novel innovations to develop and support a productive, resilient, and sustainable agricultural sector. Your proposal must engage with farmers, growers or producers to develop farm-focused solutions. Commercialising Quantum Technologies: germinator projects round 1 – UK registered organisations can apply for a share of up to £1 million for high risk, high return, quantum technology projects with defined commercial outputs. This funding is from ISCF. The aim of the competition is to stimulate the commercialisation of quantum technologies in the UK through the development of early-stage quantum technology opportunities. ISCF Smart Sustainable Plastic Packaging Demonstrators – EoI – The aim of this competition is to address widely known problems in relation to plastic packaging for consumer products.
