UK rollout of smart motorway safety tech brought forward

Transport secretary Grant Shapps has announced that the measure aimed at boosting smart motorway safety will be completed ahead of schedule. The Cabinet minister told MPs that radar technology to detect drivers who break down in live lanes will be rolled out across the entire network by the end of next year. Initially, an ‘action plan’ on this launched by Shapps in March last year sought a deadline of March 2023. Read More

Apple’s vehicle project, focused on building an autonomous driving car

Starting in 2014, Apple began working on “Project Titan,” with upwards of 1,000 employees working on developing an electric vehicle at a secret location near its Cupertino headquarters. Over the course of the last several years, Internal strife, leadership issues, and other problems impacted the car project and 2016 rumors even suggested Apple shelved plans for a car, but Apple has overcome development problems and still plans to develop a consumer-facing car.  Read More

Baidu tops Beijing autonomous vehicles road test report 3rd time

Baidu, Inc. affirmed its comprehensive leadership position in China’s autonomous driving industry with the results of the recently-published 2020 Beijing Autonomous Vehicles Road Test Report, in which Baidu Apollo topped industry peers across every testing category for the third consecutive year. In addition to maintaining the largest fleet of test vehicles and accumulating the highest total testing mileage, Baidu is also the first and only company that has obtained permission to operate fully driverless road tests on public roads. Read More

Volkswagen plans to challenge Google with own autonomous car software

HAMBURG (Reuters) – Volkswagen plans to develop most of the software needed for autonomous cars in-house, the head of the German carmaker’s luxury unit Audi said on Tuesday. The carmaker is not rejecting collaborations in some areas outright, said Markus Duesmann, who as well as running Audi is also on Volkswagen’s management board, where he is responsible for research and development. Read More

Hyundai Motor’s NEXO Fuel Cell has received the ‘Alternative Energy Car Of The Year’ Award at the annual GQ Car Awards event. NEXO is the technological flagship of Hyundai’s growing eco-vehicle fleet. Ford is more than doubling its investment in electric and autonomous vehicles to $29 billion

Ford is increasing its investment in electric and autonomous vehicles to $29 billion, the company’s top executives said in an earnings call Thursday. The automaker had previously committed to spend $11.5 billion on electrifying its vehicle lineup through 2022. Now, Ford says it will spend double that amount, while extending the timeline to 2025. Read More

February 11th, 2021 – Following the success of the third funding competition titled Catalysing Green Innovation, Driving the Electric Revolution’s next funding competition will launch in March 2021*.This competition aims to facilitate UK supply chain and manufacturing capability growth in power electronics, machines and drives (PEMD) to enable future improvements in productivity, capacity, quality or efficiency. Activities around circular economy and recycling are also in scope. We shall be looking to fund collaborative research and development projects that can demonstrate a clear return on investment and have an impact on multiple layers of the supply chain. Challenging Procurement Series: Transforming Public Procurement: February 10th, 2021 – In December 2020, the Cabinet office released a Green Paper “Transforming Public Procurement”, setting out consultation proposals for shaping UK public procurement post Brexit. They highlight the ambition for public procurement to become “a strategic lever to drive innovation”. Views have been invited on further “processes and elements” to help procurement foster innovation, beyond those currently included in the paper. Cyber security academic startup accelerator programme year 5-phase 1: Individuals based in a UK academic institution can apply for a share of up to £800,000 to join the cyber security academic startup accelerator programme (CyberASAP). The Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) will work with Innovate UK, part of UK Research and Innovation, to invest up to £800,000 in innovation cyber security projects coming from an academic research base. SBRI : Improving Hip Fracture Outcomes Using Data, phase 1: Organisations can apply for a share of £160,000 inclusive of VAT to develop a solution which will improve quality of care and outcomes for hip fracture patients. This is a Small Business Research Initiative (SBRI) competition funded by the Scottish Government through Health Innovation South East Scotland. Innovate UK Smart Grants January 2021: Opportunity for UK registered organisations to apply for a share of up to £25 million from Innovate UK to deliver game-changing and commercially viable R&D innovation that can significantly impact the UK economy. Smart is Innovate UK’s ‘Open grant funding’ programme. Innovate UK, part of UK Research and Innovation, is investing up to £25 million in the best game-changing and commercially viable innovative or disruptive ideas. KTN Innovation Exchange challenge – zero emission infrastructure for fleets: KTN’s Innovation Exchange has posted a challenge from the Greater South East Energy Hub, a collaboration of eleven Local Enterprise Partnerships (LEPs). These LEPs are working together to increase the number, scale and quality of local energy projects being delivered across the greater south east region of England. The Hub works with public sector organisations and their stakeholders to support the development and financing of local energy projects. The hub is working with 14 local authorities in particular to ensure they meet their net zero goals around electrification of transport, as indicated above, it is not restricted to these 14 Local Authorities and additional ones may also express interest. Read More
