World’s first ‘air hub’ for flying cars and delivery drones to launch in Coventry, UK this year
Coventry will be the host of the world’s first ‘air hub’ for electric flying cars, taxis and delivery drones. The city is the home of car-building in the UK but it now wants to be home to the Air One facility, attracting futuristic electric Vertical Take-Off and Landing (eVTOL) vehicles to the country. The hub will be built through a partnership with South Korean car-maker Hyundai, with the autonomous vehicles to be used to transport people and goods across and between cities. Read More

Tesla is willing to license Autopilot and has already had ‘preliminary discussions’ about it with other automakers
Tesla is open to licensing its software, including its Autopilot highly-automated driving technology and the neural network training it has built to improve its autonomous driving technology. Tesla CEO Elon Musk revealed those considerations on the company’s Q4 earnings call on Wednesday, adding that the company has in fact already “had some preliminary discussions about licensing Autopilot to other OEMs.” Read More

Three quarters of Brits would not ‘feel safe’ in a driverless car
Almost three-quarters of British adults would not feel safe travelling in a driverless car, according to new research. A study of 1,000 people found 73 percent felt autonomous vehicles are not safe, and a third (33 percent) of those quizzed said they would never trust the technology to convey them from A to B. Baidu is the sixth company approved to test fully driverless cars in California
Baidu has gotten the green light to test fully autonomous vehicles on public roads in California. The Chinese search giant is the sixth company to receive a fully autonomous testing permit from the state’s Department of Motor Vehicles (the others being Cruise, Waymo, Nuro, Zoox, and AutoX). Currently, 60 companies have an active permit to test autonomous vehicles with a safety driver in California. Read More

SoftBank’s Son expects mass production of driverless cars in two years
SoftBank Group Corp Chief Executive Masayoshi Son said on Friday he expects mass production of self-driving vehicles to start in two years. While in the first year the production of units won’t be in millions, in the next several years the cost per mile in fully autonomous cars will become very cheap, Son said, speaking at a virtual meeting of the World Economic Forum. AutoX opens fully driverless RoboTaxi pilot to Chinese public
Chinese autonomous driving developer AutoX has opened its fully driverless RoboTaxi pilot program to the public in the city of Shenzhen, after its vehicles began final testing last month. This development marks the first time that the public will be able to book a completely autonomous RoboTaxi without an accompanying safety driver in China. Read More

Kodiak Robotics’ Trucks Now Fully Autonomous 200-plus-mile Trips
Kodiak Robotics’ self-driving trucks are now making fully autonomous 200-plus-mile freight runs. Kodiak’s trucks navigated the Texas highway from Dallas to Houston—for the first time in December. These trips included one entire disengage-free day, with two back-to-back round trips between Dallas and Houston, during the day and at night. Luminar and Volvo Cars Further Collaboration with Release of Comprehensive Lidar Dataset
Luminar, the global leader in automotive lidar hardware and software technology, and Volvo Cars today released a curated dataset called Cirrus containing unique long range lidar data from Volvo Cars’ test and data collection fleet. BlackBerry expands partnership with Baidu to power autonomous driving
BlackBerry has announced an expansion of its strategic partnership with Baidu, whose high definition maps will run on the QNX Neutrino RTOS and will be mass-produced in the forthcoming GAC New Energy Aion models from the EV arm of GAC Group. The milestones build on the company’s agreement to make BlackBerry QNX’s industry-leading ISO 26262 ASIL D certified OS the foundation for Baidu’s ‘Apollo’ autonomous driving open platform. Read More

Challenging Procurement Series: Transforming Public Procurement: February 10th, 2021 – In December 2020, the Cabinet office released a Green Paper “Transforming Public Procurement”, setting out consultation proposals for shaping UK public procurement post Brexit. They highlight the ambition for public procurement to become “a strategic lever to drive innovation”. Views have been invited on further “processes and elements” to help procurement foster innovation, beyond those currently included in the paper. Cyber security academic startup accelerator programme year 5-phase 1: Individuals based in a UK academic institution can apply for a share of up to £800,000 to join the cyber security academic startup accelerator programme (CyberASAP). The Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) will work with Innovate UK, part of UK Research and Innovation, to invest up to £800,000 in innovation cyber security projects coming from an academic research base. The aim of this competition is to identify the most promising commercial opportunities. SBRI : Improving Hip Fracture Outcomes Using Data, phase 1: Organisations can apply for a share of £160,000 inclusive of VAT to develop a solution which will improve quality of care and outcomes for hip fracture patients. This is a Small Business Research Initiative (SBRI) competition funded by the Scottish Government through Health Innovation South East Scotland. Innovate UK Smart Grants January 2021: Opportunity for UK registered organisations to apply for a share of up to £25 million from Innovate UK to deliver game-changing and commercially viable R&D innovation that can significantly impact the UK economy. Smart is Innovate UK’s ‘Open grant funding’ programme. Innovate UK, part of UK Research and Innovation, is investing up to £25 million in the best game-changing and commercially viable innovative or disruptive ideas. KTN Innovation Exchange challenge – zero emission infrastructure for fleets: KTN’s Innovation Exchange has posted a challenge from the Greater South East Energy Hub, a collaboration of eleven Local Enterprise Partnerships (LEPs). These LEPs are working together to increase the number, scale and quality of local energy projects being delivered across the greater south east region of England. The Hub works with public sector organisations and their stakeholders to support the development and financing of local energy projects. The hub is working with 14 local authorities in particular to ensure they meet their net zero goals around electrification of transport, as indicated above, it is not restricted to these 14 Local Authorities and additional ones may also express interest.
