The UK will associate to Horizon Europe. Association will give UK scientists, researchers and businesses access to funding under the programme on equivalent terms as organisations in EU countries. The next step is for both sides to formally adopt the full text of the agreement taking into account the finalised EU Programme Regulations.

Horizon Europe is a seven year (2021-2027) €95.5 billion programme of which € 53.8 billion is available to focus particularly on Global Challenges and European Industrial Competitiveness pillar of Horizon Europe. Pillar II includes:

  • Health
  • Culture, creativity and inclusive society
  • Digital, industry and space
  • Climate, energy and mobility
  • Food, bioeconomy, natural resources, agriculture and environment

EU Research and Innovation Missions have been identified to increase the effectiveness of funding. They will have clear targets and a commitment to solve societal challenges such as:

  • cancer
  • adaptation to climate change including societal transformation
  • healthy oceans, seas coastal and inland waters
  • climate-neutral and smart cities
  • soil health and food

UK researchers can be funded by the next EU Programme with first grants issued later on in the Spring. Following further negotiations and agreements, more information will be published in due course.
