Law Commissions reveal legal framework plans for self-driving cars

The Law Commissions of England and Wales and Scotland have announced proposals for a comprehensive new legal framework to ensure the safety of self-driving vehicles. Among other legal innovations, a new concept of the user-in-charge would be created to describe a former driver once the vehicle is driving itself. A user-in-charge would not be criminally liable if a crash occurred while in self-driving mode. Read More

Toyota Reveals Autonomous Tanker for On-The-Road Refueling

Toyota filed a patent for an “autonomous fueling drone,” a wheeled vehicle loaded with gasoline or a battery charger, which would respond to motorists’ refueling requests on the road. After the request is wirelessly relayed via a dispatcher, the driverless tanker would navigate itself to the requesting vehicle with GPS/GNSS, and then use an unspecified set of other sensors to connect itself to the fuel tank or recharging port.  Read More

U.S. Army, Clemson University partner on autonomous vehicle project

The U.S. Army and Clemson University announced a partnership to study conversion of Bradley tanks and armored personnel carriers to autonomous use. The study for the conversion of existing Army equipment to self-driving vehicles is enabled by an $18 million Defense Department grant in the school’s Virtual Prototyping of Ground Systems, and a partnership between the U.S. Army Ground Vehicle Systems Center and the Clemson University International Center for Automotive Research, the South Carolina college announced. Read More

Hydrogen Innovation Network Launch: January 12 2021 – As part of the flagship Innovation Network programme at KTN, the Hydrogen Economy Innovation Network will form a non-competitive advisory group to pool knowledge from existing hydrogen communities (from government and industry).
