UK puts £90m into three ‘future transport zones’

The UK government has pledged £90 million to three ‘future transport zones’ to test new ways of transporting people and goods. In essence the money will go towards enabling local authorities to introduce such things as app-based transport services, some of which contain Mobility as a Service (MaaS) or driverless elements. Mayo Clinic Use Autonomous Shuttles to Transport COVID-19 Tests

Driverless electric-powered vehicles are being used for the first time in the U.S.  JTA is using Autonomous vehicles to transport medical supplies and COVID-19 tests. The Jacksonville Transportation Authority’s autonomous test vehicles are being used to transport COVID-19 tests collected at the Mayo Clinic’s drive-thru location on its Jacksonville campus. Robot Vehicles Make Contactless Deliveries Amid Coronavirus Quarantine

For the past two months, the vegetables have arrived on the back of a robot. That’s how 16 communities in Zibo, in eastern China, have received fresh produce during the coronavirus pandemic. The robot is an autonomous van that uses lidars, cameras, and deep-learning algorithms to drive itself, carrying up to 1,000 kilograms on its cargo compartment. Read More

Zenuity, a Volvo co-owned autonomous vehicle company, has been split in two, with Volvo taking full control of a new standalone firm that will focus on the development and ‘commercialisation of unsupervised autonomous drive software’. Read More

MoD invests £2m in off-road autonomous vehicle tech

The Ministry of Defence has announced that the Defence and Security Accelerator (DASA) has awarded 21 contracts worth a total £2.1 million to boost how autonomous vehicles and systems operate in challenging environments. Read More

Waymo, Alphabet’s self-driving vehicle research division, detailed a system — Progressive Population Based Augmentation (PPBA) — it claims has improved the performance of its autonomous systems while reducing the amount of data required to train them. Read More

Funding Calls & Opportunities

Business-led innovation in response to global disruption: Innovate UK, as part of UK Research and Innovation, will invest up to £20 million in innovation projects. The aim of this competition is to support UK businesses to focus on emerging or increasing needs of society and industries during and following the Covid-19 pandemic. By fast-tracking innovation, the UK will be better placed to maintain employment levels, a competitive position in global markets and make the UK more resilient to similar disruption. Read More

5G enabled road and rail transport trials in the West Midlands: West Midlands 5G (WM5G) will work in partnership with the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) and the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA). Together they will invest up to £2.5 million in innovation projects that develop a new service or product. These must improve road and rail operational efficiency, provide better-connected transport or improve traveller experience.
