Autonomous driving startup raises $462 million in Toyota-led funding

Autonomous driving firm said it raised $462 million in its latest funding round, led by an investment by Toyota Motor Corp. Toyota invested around $400 million (¥44.2 billion) in the round, said in a statement Wednesday, marking its biggest investment in an autonomous driving company with a Chinese background. Read More

Porsche demonstrates autonomous driving in the workshop

As part of a collaboration with “Kopernikus Automotive”, Porsche demonstrated how autonomous driving can be used in the workshop on a test field on the company’s premises in Ludwigsburg. For the system, the partners rely primarily on artificial intelligence, which requires less sensor technology and reduces the costs of the technology. Read more

Robotic Research to Start Testing Fully Autonomous Unmanned Shuttles

a leading provider of autonomy and robotic technologies, announced today it will begin testing fully autonomous low-speed shuttles that are totally unmanned in the second quarter of this year. Current commercial applications of low-speed shuttles use onboard safety attendants to monitor the safety inside and outside the vehicle. Robotic Research plans to start testing without onboard attendants. Read more

History of smart cities: Timeline

The journey to smart cities goes way back to the 1970s, when Los Angeles created the first urban big data project: “A Cluster Analysis of Los Angeles”. The first smart city was arguably Amsterdam with the creation of a virtual digital city in 1994. Things then speeded up in mid-2000s when IBM and Cisco launched separate initiatives. In 2011, the inaugural Smart City Expo World Congress was held in Barcelona, which has now become an annual event charting smart cities’ development. Read More

Integrated Mission System for Multi Autonomous Vehicle Missions – 17th March In October 2019, Thales and the University of Southampton took an autonomous boat, an autonomous submarine and a UAV to the Thales Turnchapel Wharf Facility in Plymouth to test out their newly developed Integrated Mission Management System (IMMS). The aim of an IMMS is to integrate the planning and monitoring of a multi-autonomous vehicle mission onto a single computer, allowing a small team of people to plan, run, and intervene in a safe and effective mission. In this talk Matt & James, two Thales graduate engineers with no background in autonomous systems, programming, boats, submarines, UAVs or engineering (they are physicists) tell the story of the project from inception to execution, with a particular focus on the lessons they have learned as entry-level engineers and the “graduate rules” they have learned about life in engineering. Read More

MuCCA (Multi-Car Collision Avoidance) – 19th March The Multi-Car Collision Avoidance Project (MuCCA) has been a £4.6m, 30-month project funded by the Centre for Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CCAV) via Innovate UK. As the project draws to a close, please join us at the final showcase to hear how the consortium consisting of, Applus Idiada, Connected Places Catapult, Cosworth, Cranfield University, Westfield Sportscars and SBD Automotive has developed a next-generation driver aid to avoid multi-car collisions on motorways.
